Completion
To complete the throw, Tori pivots on both her feet in an anticlockwise direction. Tori is turning from her right to her left. As she turns, the left hand of Tori pulls and the right hand of Tori pushes Uke around. This pull and pushing movement of Tori’s hands is vital because it pulls Uke forward and around Tori’s right hip. The pull and push of Tori’s hands also helps Tori to turn her body from right to left. If Tori is smaller than Uke, then Tori will also drive the right hand upwards. This helps Tori to get underneath Uke and keep Uke off balance. This is why Tai Otoshi is such an effective throw for the smaller player on a taller opponent.
The rotational force generated by the push and pulling movement of Tori’s hands and the turn of her body away from Uke, brings Uke up and over Tori’s extended right leg, effectively tripping Uke as he falls forward. To regain his balance, Uke needs to step forward with his right leg but he can not because Tori’s right leg is blocking his right leg from coming forward. The left turn that Tori makes with her body pulls Uke forward over her right leg. The turn is important and powerful because it enables Tori to use the whole of her body weight to throw Uke forward. This turn to the left by Tori does not end until her head is in line with her left knee. The position of the feet has not changed but most of her weight is now on her left leg. The left foot is therefore flat on the floor but the left knee is bent almost at right angles. The right leg is also bent but Tori’s right foot is up on her toes. Tori has effectively turned her body through 90 degrees to complete the throw. As Uke falls to the ground, Tori must maintain a strong pull on Uke’s right sleeve with her left hand. This helps pull Uke around so that he falls on to his back rather than his side. It is also important that as Tori turns her body to her left, she keeps a straight back and does not bend forward as this will reduce the rotational force generated by turning her body.
